Job Title: Research Director
Job Summary:
Context Research Directors are experienced ethnographic consultants who work closely with corporate clients from a variety of industries to design and lead ethnographic research and analysis in both short and longer-term engagements. The Research Director is responsible on their projects for the design of the ethnographic methodology, conducting a portion of the field research, overseeing the research team in the field and the overall analysis and development of final deliverables.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with Context Analysts and Context’s Principal Anthropologist to develop screeners, innovative ethnographic approaches and field methodologies that provide in-depth consumer insight for client product development, communications and marketing applications.
- Design manageable ethnographic field guides that teams of ethnographers can implement in the field to gather rich consumer stories and observations.
- Train collaborating field ethnographers on methodological approaches and set standards for field reporting.
- Conduct expert ethnographic interviews and participant observation, often in the presence of clients, with the ability to manage the client relationship as well as listen intently to participants and ask the right questions to get richly detailed and holistic perspectives on consumer experience.
- Lead small teams of ethnographers in analysis by developing qualitative data analysis tools and conducting pattern analysis from transcripts, video, photographs and participant diaries.
- Distill ethnographic observations into salient insights that provide bottom-line impact on client business issues.
- Present findings and implications in an engaging and powerful way to help clients think differently about their customers so they can develop products and services that empower consumers to have great experiences.
Skills Required:
- Expert-level ethnographic research training and experience: The ability to design and implement ethnographic methods (participant observation, conversational, semi-structured, and opportunistic interviewing) so that clients, team members and participants get the most out of ethnography.
- Creative Analytical Thinking: Applicants must have the ability to sift through mounds of ethnographic data to get the big picture story, as well as supporting data points, and apply that thinking in a creative way to the client business.
- Strong Communication Skills: Applicants must have the ability to develop trust from clients and be able to communicate ethnographic research perspectives to clients who may have limited experience with the approaches. Applicants must be seasoned presenters and enjoy speaking in front of large and small audiences, while sharing the stage in team presentations with Context collaborators.
- Collaboration skills: Applicants should be able to produce research products in small teams, both coordinating and supporting the work of others and integrating individual contributions into a larger team effort.
- Juggling: Handle multiple client projects at one time, with the ability to prioritize your own work and manage time efficiently.
- Writing: Ability to write concise, yet insightful, ethnographic field reports and engaging PowerPoint presentations that tell consumer stories and provide clear analytical implications.
- Great sense of humor is a must. The ability to relate to clients, co-workers and participants in a way that makes this fun work even more enjoyable for everyone involved is highly desired.
Experience Required:
- 3-5 Years experience in ethnographic consulting or corporate environment.
- Masters degree in anthropology or related field, with ethnographic training or equivalent experience.
Special Requirements:
- This is a full-time position, located in Baltimore, Maryland. All qualified applications must commit to working out of Baltimore, Maryland office.
- Travel up to 20% of time.
